You look maaaahhhhvalous

Billy Crystal Fernando Lamas You look maaaahhhhvalous

(yes, I know a lot of you are too young for this reference – Ha!)

As I was watching GMA Weekend this morning, I saw them highlight something that I think is SO. IMPORTANT. (And I’m actually serious!). They showed the story of two college guys who hand out compliments (warning: video) on their college campus every Wednesday. They do it as a way to boost morale in people during these tough times, and I applaud their spirit. I am a firm believer is giving out compliments, as I think they can make someone feel better, doesn’t cost a dime to do it and has such a positive ripple effect.

I think a smile is a beautiful thing – it can light up a room, and a compliment can make that happen, if it’s actually TAKEN. I think it is such a shame that most of the time when a compliment is given, esp to a woman, it is usually followed up with something along the lines of “Yeah, but (something negative about themselves)” or “Oh, this old thing? I’ve had it (forever, it doesn’t really fit, etc.)”. All of that basically negates what was complimented and makes the complimenter feel like a big dummy for thinking they noticed something good. That’s stupid. Sorry. We need to learn how to TAKE A COMPLIMENT.

I know it’s hard, because our knee jerk reaction is to temper the compliment so we don’t appear to cocky. Forget that! Take it and rock it. Someone took the time to notice the fact that you made that extra effort in some way, so appreciate that someone noticed! I have a gorg coworker who might not have the best self-esteem and would always dismiss my compliments. Well, I got sick of that, so I told her that when I complimented her that she had to say “Thank you” and walk away. I would take nothing else. Well, the joke is now she says “Thank you and walk away”, but she now says it with a smile and accepts the compliment. You can say I wore her down, but I know that I have changed just a little bit in how she carries herself – which not only affects her, but makes me happy, too. See how that whole ripple effect works? icon smile You look maaaahhhhvalous

Seriously, I know there isn’t any of us that doesn’t like to get those warm fuzzies, even if we do automatically want to dismiss it. But, while we work on accepting our own compliments, we can make it a habit to give them out to others. Does it really! take much effort to say something nice to someone? Not really – it just take practice, and you know what your mom would always tell you, “Practice makes perfect – or at least pretty damn good”.

"The Earth is what we all have in common."

Hey, lovelies – did you take advantage of the Josie Maran sale I talked about last month? I hope so, because then you would already know what I have learned. Her stuff is fabulous! Like, use daily, great. I was able to try her eyeshadow in “Parfait” (a matte soft pink), and it has become a staple to me. I use it as a base for pretty much all my neutral looks, and it just feels good going on. I was also able to try her “Plumping Lip Gloss in “Strength”. Now, the only quibble I have about this is that I didn’t feel any plumping action, but, damn, that didn’t matter to me when I put this taupey, shimmer color on. Gorgeous color and damn if it didn’t taste great, too. (Come on, you KNOW how lip products taste affects your usage of them – it does for me.) Like, I wanna lick it off as soon as I put it on, good. Okay, maybe that’s why I didn’t see any plumping action – I’m not gonna lie.

Anyway, if for some reason you didn’t get anything then, you really have no excuse to pass up her “Earth Day Kit” at Sephora ($48).

Josie Maran Earth Day Kit "The Earth is what we all have in common."
This set contains:
- 100% Organic Argan Oil (3-5 uses)
- 0.14oz Plumping Lip Gloss in Daring (sheer shimmering rosy nude)
- 0.12oz Cream Blush in Sunrise (soft pink)
- 0.17oz Mascara in Black
- 0.04 oz Eye Liner in Black

As you can see, this kit has universally flattering colors and since the products contain natural, paraben- and fragrance-free ingredients this would be a great kit to get to know Josie’s line of products. The products come in a box made from recycled materials and printed with fun green tips from Josie herself. So, not only are you doing good to yourself with healthy products, you are helping the environment, too. Not a thing wrong with that, right?

Not quite a Barbie girl

Today is Barbie’s 50th birthday!

50th anniversary barbie Not quite a Barbie girlI was never a big Barbie girl, let alone a big doll girl at all growing up (remind me to tell you the story of my mom nailing dolls to my wall on display – I think I have a pic of it somewhere, btw). However, how do you ignore the birthday of an icon? You really can’t, esp since anywhere you look lately you see it hyped – from a runway show at Fashion Week, to a collaboration with Stila cosmetics for a retro Barbie makeup collection of tins. So I decided to celebrate just a tiny bit. I changed my fingernail polish:zoya polish Barbie Not quite a Barbie girl

I put on Zoya Nail Polish in Barbie. It truly is a Barbie color pink – very bubblegum with a hint of frost. I was lucky enough to pick this up during a twitter only special, and decided this would be a great day to try this one out. I like it, but I think it will make a much better toe color for me this Spring, as I am not used to such pastel colors on my fingers now.

She’s a brick-hoooooouse…

I am so ready for Spring. I much prefer a constant stream of warm temps as opposed to this 70 one day and tornados/ice storms the next day. (Welcome to Oklahoma weather, ya’ll!)
Anyway….It’s not like I want to lay out in the sun – I am a pale freckled lovely that gets pink when the tv stays on me too long. But that doesn’t mean I wanna be all ghostly pale all the time. Enter the “Shimmer Brick”:

bobbi brown shimmer brick Shes a brick hoooooouse... Shes a brick hoooooouse...bobbi brown apricot brick Shes a brick hoooooouse...

On the upper left is Bobbi Brown’s Copper Diamond Shimmer Brick. The one on the upper right is Flirt! Shimmer Rocks Peach Glow All-Over Illuminator and the one on the bottom left is Bobbi Brown’s Apricot Shimmer Brick. They are all very similiar, save for one thing – the price! The Bobbi Brown bricks run $38, while the Flirt! brick runs $16. (I don’t know what was going on, but I was lucky enough to get my brick on sale at Kohl’s, where Flirt! Cosmetics is carried exclusively, on sale for 50% off – $8!).

So, while we are all cutting back on our spending, I find it hard to justify spending $38 for something I can get a damn close dupe of for almost 1/3rd the price. I understand brand loyalty, and the lure of the Platinum Pink Brick, but I gotta admit I love saving the $$ to treat myself to many little things, if possible. And if I can do that, and avoid a sunburn, then all the better.
