In this edition of “Makeup Wars” we are talking about our Valentine’s Day looks. In my case, I associate Valentine’s Day with Pink and tend to stick with that color family, but keep my eyes pretty simple since Pink around my eyes ends up making me look like I have another case of “Pink Eye”, so, no good on me.
Check out what I would use:
Three Custom Color “The Sweetest Thing” Palette – I used the deceptively sheer “Icing on the Cupcake” eyeshadow as a wash on my lid, as it reflects different colors depending on how the light hits it. I use the “Lollipop Lip & Cheek Stain” for a bit of color on my cheeks.
mark Make It Rich Lip Color Crayon in “Peony” – This lip pencil is a bit more purple & glossier dupe of my beloved NARS 413 BLKR Pencil, which got stolen last year. With the mark pencil only $11, less than half of the NARS pencil, I’m not in a super rush to replace it when I have this fab pencil stepping up.
Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream – this BB works like a great tinted moisturizer for me, giving me light coverage, but still knocking down some of my redness.
Covergirl LashBlast Clump Crusher Mascara – This latest LashBlast version lets me layer on the mascara and not make me have to separate everything out at the end, because it’s already done. And the flat side of the brush makes it easy for me to get my bottom lashes, which I would do for a night out. I don’t do them for my day to day look.
Mally Beauty 24/7 Brow Express – this dual-ended wand lets me shape my brows up with the pencil end and then set them in place with the powder coated sponge on the other end. They don’t move when they are done.
butter London Nail Lacquer in “La Moss” – The one way I *will* vamp it up for Valentine’s Day is on my nail and this deep, dark red is just great for that.
So, this is what I would use. What do you do for your Valentine’s Day look? Do you vamp it up? Go all sweet and romantic? Or is it just another Thursday to you?
Now, go check out what these other lovelies are doing for their Valentine’s Day:

This season I was able to go backstage, and watch the preparations, for the Nicole Miller Spring/Summer 2011 collection fashion show.
The makeup team was lead by James Kaliardos, for MAC Cosmetics. In keeping with the 60′s throwback vibe of the collection, James drew inspiration for the makeup from the Catherine Deneuve film, “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” – glowy complexion, silver & grey eye colors & pink, pouty lips.
The hair team was lead by Kevin Ryan, for Rsession Tools. Kevin created a braided, slightly messy bun that was held together with elastics & rubberized bobby pins. (*Seriously – I ran out to Ricky’s and picked up some of those bobby pins myself!). Kevin also shared his secret for pulling out knotted hairstyles – forceps. As in, a surgical tool. He says you should be able to use it on yourself, but I have yet to try it, let alone think I can twist myself around enough to make it look as effortless as he does, that’s for sure.
The lead nail tech for the show was TJ Kelly, for butter LONDON. Nicole worked with butter LONDON to create a custom grey/blue color that went with a grey in the fabric in her collection. It’s not for sale (*yet, fingers crossed), unfortch, but is so on point, I hope they reconsider.

Way back in the day (when I was in Elementary School) I remember a commercial on tv that encouraged us to plant trees in honor of Arbor Day, which was created in 1872 to encourage planting trees and caring for them. It is celebrated on the last Friday in April each year. Another environmentally friendly day is Earth Day, which was established on April 22nd, 1970 – and considered the beginning of the modern environmental movement. This year we are lucky enough to have both of these great awareness days in the same week.
In honor of these days, I am going to highlight a few companies that are doing their part to encourage a greener, more environmentally friendly way of getting beautiful: Origins: Origins has always been organically friendly but this Spring, they have started the “Return to Origins Recycling Program”. This allows you to bring in *any* empty cosmetic containers (from any brand) to be recycled and they will give you a FREE sample of one of their high-performance skincare products.
butter LONDON: butter LONDON is a 3 Free (the toxic Formaldehyde, Toluene and DBP) polish line with such great colors, and whom basically admonishes “3 Free is a way of life”. This Earth Day they will be giving out a bottle of their polish to the first 500 lovelies who click on their website (for us in the US, it starts at 8am PST/11am EST). But, don’t despair, if you are not one of the first 500 clickers, you can still take advantage of a great offer of 5 for $40 of colors you choose, or let them know what you are looking for and they will make a recommendation for you. (Offer good thru 4-30-09) *also, don’t forget to look at their cute dictionary. Vert: Instead of looking all over online for more organic products to incorporate into your lifestyle, just go to the Vert – “The eco-chic beauty boutique” website to choose from over 25+ eco companies from around the world. Their goal is to provide conscious consumers “the best selection of pure and organic beauty products available”. In addition, she carries my eco fave Josie Maran. *(speaking of Josie, don’t forget her “Earth Day Kit” is still available at Sephora, too.)
Lavanila: I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the Plant a Billion Trees Initiative, the program that the yummy fragrance company Lavanila has teamed up with the Nature Conservancy for Earth Month. The Nature Conservancy’s goal is to plant 1 billion trees over the next 7 years. Lavanila will “plant a tree” with every online order at lavanila.com during the month of April, helping them get even closer to their goal.
Have a great Earth Week, and remember, even if you don’t live an entirely green lifestyle, we can all take baby steps to start incorporating green actions into our lives. I’ll share one way I do this – my family and I reuse our shower towels. It saves on washing more laundry, water, electricity and the wear and tear on the towels themselves. We have over the door hooks in the bathroom and hang them there after we dry off. It just takes one step to start the journey.
