Finding My Perfect Foundation

Remember when I told you that one of my resolutions this year was that I wanted to find my perfect foundation? Well, the search is on.

Finding My Perfect Foundation

Now, I was naive and really thought it was going to be as simple as just finding my correct shade. Really, that is just one piece of the puzzle for me. In reality, this is more of a lifestyle change for this tinted moisturizer gal. This is making realize that it takes me more time to get ready since I have to wait for all of my layers of moisturizer & primer to “set” before I get the next layer on before I can get to the foundation, instead of just slathering on my TM. It also isn’t as forgiving about slacking skin maintenance. Since it is tends to be thicker/more opaque than my TM’s, it doesn’t do well with unexfoliated skin, no matter how many layers of potions I have put on prior.

And the variety. Oh gawd, it is freaking overwhelming. Drugstore? Department store? Matte? Illuminating? Mineral? 3in1/Multitasking? Or, finding a color match, but the product is discontinued now? Like, really, so much to choose from – this pic is just a sampling of what I am trying.

So, I’m just getting started. I’m trying to wear one at a time for a couple of weeks, but sometimes it’s just a matter of what is within arms reach, ya know?

Tell me – what foundations to I need to make sure are on my “try me” list?

tarte “Journey to Natural Beauty” QVC TSV

You guys know I love me a good Beauty TSV on QVC. And today’s deal is pretty amazing. It is the tarte Journey to Natural Beauty Six-Piece Collection, today only, for $59.94 (*a $165 value, fyi).

tarte journey to natural collection

The collection includes:
(1) Amazonian butter lipstick in “plummy rose”
(1) Amazonian clay 12-hour full coverage Broad Spectrum SPF 15 foundation in choice of shades: Fair, Light, Medium, Tan or Deep
(1) lights, camera, flashes! statement mascara
(1) brow architect brow shaper, liner and definer
(1) Amazonian clay 12-hour blush in “fearless”
(1) limited-edition airbrush finish bamboo foundation brush
(1) cosmetic bag (*measures 10-1/4″L x 10-3/4″H x 1/2″W)

I’ve been playing with this collection for a while and a couple of the items really stood out for me and have become staples in my bag lately. First, the butter lipstick – creamy, moisturizing and almost balm like on my lips. And the color is almost nude on me, but just color in it to make my lips look not so pale in these winter months. Second, the brush – holy smokes! The softness this brush was so good that I just sat around brushing it on my cheek and arm for many days before I even moved it to the bathroom to use to put my makeup on. I just wasn’t ready to dirty it up yet. And then, when I finally DID use it – it buffed my foundation whisper smooth. And the bag – it has already become my new travel makeup bag. Done and done.

As for the other items, the foundation was a true full coverage product. Which means it was too opaque for me and my freckles. But, it felt good on, not heavy like some full coverage can be and it seemed to last a good 6-7hours on me before I saw any fade. It felt moisturizing, without getting all greasy, which was nice on my sometimes dry skin. I wasn’t a big fan of the blush, but that was ONLY because it was too sparkly/shimmery for me – those just never look good on me any more. On you? I bet it would be really pretty. 🙂
I need to play with the mascara and the brow shaper some more, because the both look to have nice potential – the mascara has a really nice sized brush head on it and the brow pencil is multi-purpose in one stick.

So, if you are looking to add some new tarte products to your stash, or even just wanting to get started with them for the first time, I highly suggest you nab this TSV today. What say you? Do you guys already use tarte on the regular?

From the Drugstore to the Runway: Maybelline New York

One of the great things I love about beauty is that it can be all mixed up. I mean, that you can wear a $3 eyeliner with a $75 concealer. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is a great example of this. The “Official Makeup Sponsor” of MBFW is drugstore favorite, Maybelline New York. That’s right – the same items that you can get at your local CVS or Target is what was used on the models at some of the biggest designer names’ runway shows this month.

Check out some of the looks they created this season:

You can tell that the new “Fit Me!” Foundation, the Volum’ Express the Falsies Mascara and the Line Express Eyeliner were staples for the makeup artists at the shows and each of these only run around $6 -$8 (*and if you watch, there are usually BOGO1/2off at Walgreen’s and CVS pretty regularly.).

So, have you tried any of these Maybelline products? Any of them you are looking to try? I think I am going to try to go find my “Fit Me!” match pretty soon myself. Lemme know what your match is, if you go and find out, too.

“This oil-free formula give skin a soft-matte finish that looks healthy and natural—never heavy. And it’s buildable, so you can customize your level of coverage.”Bobbi Brown

The Problem: You want a foundation that lasts and gives you shine-free, even-looking skin, but yours never looks natural—and it starts to fade by lunch.

The Fix: This oil-free, long-wearing foundation balances oily and combination skin, so you’ll have a soft-matte, even-looking complexion without needing to pile on powder throughout the day. And like all of Bobbi’s foundations, the shades are yellow- based for a natural look.

Natural Finish Long Lasting Foundation SPF 15 offers multiple benefits:BalancingThis oil-free formula hydrates and controls shine where you need it. Sponge-like powders absorb excess oil on the surface of the skin, while emollients lock in moisture to ensure skin stays perfectly balanced. All Day WearTransfer-resistant formula helps create a barrier against heat and humidity for 8 hours of wear. Even in the most humid climates, makeup stays in place.Natural, Soft-Matte FinishThis new formula contains an oil-free emulsion system that delivers a blend of finely milled pigments, spherical powders, and mica for natural-looking coverage.

Perfect for oily and normal/combination skin. Available in 20 Shades at counters and online now for $45.

"Our differences are only skin deep…"

If there is one thing I am looking for besides the perfect moisturizer is the perfect foundation. If I wear anything on my face, besides my Avon Magix, I tend to favor tinted moisturizers. I do this because of my pretty freckles – I hate for them to look masked with heavy foundations and obviously look like I am wearing makeup.

Well, I seem to be aging, for some reason, and maybe, just maybe, I might be where I need a bit more coverage. Since I am not able to easily test out more foundations in the drugstore, it’s hard to find a good match for my very light and freckled (with such cute dimples, btw) pretty face. But I think Prescriptives may be able to come to the rescue.
With their AllSkins line, they assure that 100% of women will find their perfect shade and formula – Guaranteed! Sounds like what I need. But, maybe you are like me and still have a few questions about finding your perfect foundation. Well, Jillian Veran – Prescriptives Director of Artistry – has some answers for us:

“1. Do different skin types need different foundation formulas?

Absolutely – the environment can affect how our skin behaves so the same skin can even need different types of foundation during the year. In today’s beauty world there are so many options, the best thing to do is to address what you want and need from your foundation. Do you like a sheer, luminous, satin or matte finish? Do you like liquid, cream or powder formulas? And of course what is your skin type – normal, dry, oily, combination?

2. What is the best way to apply foundation? Should I use a sponge, a brush or my fingertips?

Applying foundation is a personal preference and each method creates a different finish. Using your fingers will allow for a sheerer finish; a sponge is a little tricky for a non-makeup artist as it can place a lot of foundation in one spot so be sure to move quickly across the areas you are applying to; a brush is always great as it helps you create a very smooth even finish.
Also, I always recommend using the Px Buff Brush after your foundation is dry to soften the look of the makeup and create a sheer air brushed effect.

3. If I’m testing foundation in a department store, is it ok to do a swatch on my hand? Or should I always test the foundation on my face?

The best and most accurate way to test foundation is on the side of the face along the jaw line. Stick to this method for fool proof matching.

4. If my skin tone is between foundation shades, what’s the best solution?

Prescriptives Custom Blend Foundation is ideal for this. Your foundation can be blended not only to exactly match your skins own unique undertones, but also to create whatever finish and skin care needs you desire.

5. What foundations are best for acne prone skin? For dry skin? For mature skin

All skin types should start with a foundation primer like Px Flawless Face Primer. This will allow the makeup to wear longer and for a seamless finish.

Dry skin should wear a moisture based formula and should steer away from powder formulas. But if you prefer powder, use a soft cream-to-powder formula like Px Photochrome Light-Adjusting Compact Makeup SPF 15.
Normal skin can wear whatever they like, it’s all about preference.
Oily or acne prone skin should wear an oil-free formula. Powder foundation is great for this type of skin.
Mature skin must be hydrated before applying any foundation. The foundation shouldn’t be too matte or heavy as this can accentuate the age of the skin.

6. Do foundations with sunscreen provide enough protection? Should I need to wear extra sunscreen?

Sun damage is the leading cause of aging. So no, using foundation as sunscreen isn’t the best idea. Foundation doesn’t provide a full mask on the skin so the sun will get through.
Always use an SPF under your foundation for that extra layer of protection. I highly recommend Prescriptives All Weather Friend SPF 40 as it’s incredibly lightweight and feels great under foundation.”

Also, until January 31st, Prescriptives is offering a full size foundation brush for $17 with purchase to help you apply your new perfectly matched foundation.
